Developer Productivity Assessment

A quantitative 4-pillar maturity assessment that benchmarks your engineering team's productivity practices and generates a structured readiness score.

Overview

The Developer Productivity Assessment is a structured questionnaire that combines manager-supplied answers with live metric data pulled directly from Koalr. The output is a maturity report showing where your engineering practices stand today, how you compare to similar teams, and what to fix first.

It is not a sentiment survey. Scores are anchored to observable behaviors and real delivery data — DORA rates, cycle times, review health — so the results are repeatable and defensible in leadership reviews.

The 4 Pillars

PillarWhat it measures
Development & ToolsCI/CD adoption, test coverage, deployment frequency, change failure rate, toolchain maturity
Ways of WorkingPR size discipline, review turnaround, branch hygiene, on-call load, incident response process
Product ManagementPlanning cadence, story refinement quality, backlog health, cycle time predictability
Culture & CollaborationPsychological safety proxies, cross-team dependency patterns, knowledge sharing, onboarding ramp time

Each pillar is scored independently on a 0–100 scale and rolled up into an overall maturity score.

How It Works

  1. Managers answer roughly 40 questions covering current team practices. Questions use a 1–5 rating scale (e.g., "How consistently does your team write tests before merging?").
  2. Koalr combines responses with live metric data. DORA four-key metrics, PR cycle time, and review health scores from your connected integrations are weighted into the pillar scores automatically.
  3. Scores are computed per pillar and surfaced alongside peer benchmarks derived from anonymized data across teams of similar size and stack.

The questionnaire takes roughly 15–20 minutes to complete. Koalr saves progress, so managers can finish in multiple sessions.

Assessment Output

OutputDescription
Pillar gaugeSVG arc gauge (0–100) for each of the 4 pillars
Overall maturity scoreWeighted composite across all pillars
Peer benchmark bandWhere your team sits vs. teams of similar headcount
Improvement recommendationsRanked list of specific actions per pillar, ordered by estimated impact

Recommendations link directly to the relevant Koalr pages (e.g., a low "PR size discipline" score links to the Pull Requests page with a pre-applied filter for large PRs).

Run the assessment quarterly. Re-scoring every 90 days gives you enough time for improvement actions to show up in the underlying metrics, while keeping the feedback loop tight enough to course-correct.

Koalr stores all historical assessment runs. The Assessment history view plots your pillar scores over time so you can demonstrate maturity improvement to leadership or investors.
