Team Well-Being
Anonymous daily check-in micro-surveys across 5 pillars — Stress & Resilience, Motivation, Inclusion, Psychological Safety, and Alignment — with team-level radar chart and 30-day trend.
Overview
The Team Well-Being Tracker surfaces how your engineering team is doing beyond velocity metrics. Every day, team members receive a single anonymous micro-survey question in Slack. Responses roll up into team-level scores across five pillars — no individual answers are ever stored or attributed.
This gives engineering managers and team leads an early signal for burnout, disengagement, or alignment issues before they become attrition or performance problems.
The 5 Pillars
| Pillar | What It Measures |
|---|---|
| Stress & Resilience | Workload pressure, recovery time, and ability to handle incidents or crunch periods |
| Motivation | Sense of purpose, excitement about the work, and feeling of forward progress |
| Inclusion | Whether team members feel their voice is heard and their contributions recognized |
| Psychological Safety | Comfort raising concerns, admitting mistakes, and proposing ideas without fear |
| Alignment | Clarity on team goals, confidence in roadmap direction, and trust in leadership decisions |
How Check-Ins Work
Each team member receives one question per day via Slack, drawn from a rotating pool of 30 developer-specific questions. Questions are mapped to a pillar and answered on a 1–5 scale:
- 1 — Strongly disagree / Very low
- 3 — Neutral
- 5 — Strongly agree / Very high
Examples from the question pool:
- "I felt in control of my workload today." (Stress & Resilience)
- "I'm excited about what I'm building this sprint." (Motivation)
- "I felt comfortable speaking up in team discussions today." (Psychological Safety)
Questions rotate so no two consecutive days present the same item. Each check-in takes fewer than 30 seconds to complete directly inside Slack.
Baseline Period
Charts and scores are withheld until the team has collected at least 14 days of responses. This baseline period ensures scores reflect a meaningful sample rather than a single bad day. During the baseline period, the dashboard shows a progress indicator and the number of days remaining.
Dashboard
Once the baseline is met, the Team Well-Being dashboard shows:
- Overall Score (0–100) — weighted average across all five pillars, updated daily
- Pillar Radar Chart — a pentagon chart showing relative strength across all five pillars at a glance
- 30-Day Trend Bar Chart — daily overall score over the past 30 days, useful for spotting dips after incidents, reorgs, or sprint crunch periods
- Streak Counter — consecutive days with at least one team response, encouraging consistent participation
All charts are team-level only. No individual breakdown is available anywhere in the UI.
Privacy & Anonymity
Koalr stores only team-level aggregates. Individual responses are discarded after being folded into the team score — they are never persisted to the database. This means:
- No manager can see how a specific person answered
- No admin export or API endpoint exposes individual responses
- Teams with fewer than 3 respondents on a given day have that day's data suppressed to prevent reverse-engineering individual answers
This design is intentional. The goal is honest signal, not surveillance.
Score Interpretation
| Score Range | Signal |
|---|---|
| 80–100 | Healthy — team is energized and aligned |
| 60–79 | Stable — minor friction worth monitoring |
| 40–59 | At risk — investigate root causes; consider a team retrospective |
| 20–39 | Distressed — urgent attention needed; manager should intervene |
| 0–19 | Critical — escalate immediately |
Scores that drop 10+ points week-over-week trigger an in-app alert visible to the team's manager.
Slack Configuration
To enable well-being check-ins for a team:
- Go to Integrations → Slack and confirm the Slack integration is connected.
- Navigate to the Well-Being page.
- In the schedule settings panel, select the Slack channel where check-ins should be posted (typically the team's main channel).
- Set the send time — the time of day Slack messages are delivered (defaults to 9:30 AM).
- Click Save. Check-ins begin the following day.
Team members must be in the selected Slack channel to receive check-ins. Participation is voluntary — non-responses are simply excluded from that day's aggregate.
